SFATA Advocacy Update

The Tortoise is Moving

Progress comes slowly in DC. But, I wanted to send a quick update on a couple of positive developments that are taking place at the national level on our issues, and give a brief bullet point update for you.

Positive Developments -

  • A new report - which I will write more about in a few days - came out Wednesday that could signal a shift among 120 leaders in tobacco control. The authors recognize the importance of alternative nicotine products and boldly talk about it in this report.  Is this the beginning of legitimacy?
Congressional update –
  • In Congress, this was a crazy week.  The President proposed his first budget which reflected the priorities he discussed on the campaign, and whatever you think of his priorities, it should surprise no one.
  • The House Budget, Ways and Means, and Energy & Commerce Committees have passed their parts of the ACA/Obamacare replacement bill, dubbed the American Health Care Act (AHCA). – The full House will see if they can muster the votes needed to pass it next week!
  • Trump nominee for Food and Drug Administration Commissioner, Scott Gottlieb is preparing for his confirmation hearings before the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee next week, but his confirmation is expected to be without much drama.
  • The Cole-Bishop bill to change the predicate date and keep our products on the market is gaining some steam, but the key will be whether it is included in the spending bills that must pass by April 28th.  We have 18 cosponsors, but please keep the heat on YOUR members to get on board!  (see below)

Here is a handy link that takes to directly to our coalition effort advocacy site for activating on this important federal issue...

www.StopTheVapeBan.com is a one-stop shop for you, your employees, AND your customers that has click-and-go easy options to help facilitate your outreach by email, phone call, and Twitter.

Your own specific Congressmen will be contacted by you automatically after putting in your address so the site can locate the proper recipients of your message.  Easy and effective!

You can even download materials to put out in your shop to encourage your customers to engage as a "silent advocate" on your counter.  I don't know how they could make this any easier for our busy members.  Will you help?

Shout out to SFATA on keeping us up to date on Advocacy. When we get alerts they will be posted here.
